B Everyone, including members of Congress and Native American tribes (部落), wants fewer wild horses on Western lands and tribal reserves. But there is little agreement on how the number should be reduced. The wild horses were brought to America from Spain in the 16th century. By 1971, the number of wild horses had dropped sharply. So Congress passed a law to save them. Since then, the number of wild horses has increased three times. An average adult wild horse eats more than two-and-a-half kilograms of grass and drinks 75 liters of water a day. As a result, non-native plants begin growing in the affected areas. The horses’ actions have also caused soil erosion (侵蚀) around water sources, threatening water quality. Gillian Lyons is a wildlife expert at The Humane Society of the United States. She said, “Originally, when the 1971 act passed, it allowed the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to destroy healthy horses, if populations grew too large.” Since 1994, the BLM has been prevented from destroying wild horses. The agency now catches and places them in holding facilities (设施). A few horses are adopted, but not many. It costs about $50 million a year to care for the captured (捕获) animals. President Donald Trump wants to cut the BLM budget by $10 million in 2018. If Congress approves the plan, the BLM would have to find other ways to manage horse populations. “They’re going to do that in a couple of ways,” said Lyons, “one of which is to get rid of horses in holding facilities.” Recently, a House committee voted to permit the BLM to kill the horses. But a Senate committee voted against another bill that would lift the ban on horse killing. Native American tribes have struggled with the problem for years, but so far they haven’t persuaded each other. 24. What is the result of too many wild horses? A. The soil is better protected. B. Water quality will be influenced. C. There will be a lack of grass supply. D. No plants begin growing in the affected areas. 25. What do we know about the government’s policy related to wild horses? A. The BLM budget will be reduced to $10 million. B. The 1971 act did not permit killing healthy horses. C. Since 1994, destroying wild horses has been prevented. D. Members of Congress have reached an agreement on horse killing. 26. How will the BLM manage horse population after its budget is cut? A. By removing horses in holding facilities. B. By asking people to adopt some horses. C. By limiting the area of tribal reserves. D. By killing the horses. 27. What is the Senate committee’s attitude towards the killing of the horse? A. Supportive. B. Negative (反对的). C. Neutral(中立的). D. doubtful.

C Going to bed at the same time every night could benefit your child’s brain development, a recent study found. Based on previous researches, people believe that going to bed late hurts children’s academic performance and overall health. However, the recent finding represents a new twist. Researchers at University College London find that when 3-year-olds have a regular bedtime, they perform better on cognitive(认知) tests at 7 than children whose bedtimes are not regular. The research examined data on bedtimes and cognitive scores for 11,178 children. The research began when the kids were 3-4 years old. And the researchers followed into the children’s houses and kept track of their bedtimes and other factors that might influence sleep quality such as kids skipping dinner or having a television in bedroom. When they were 7 years old, they received cognitive tests in reading, math, space recognizing ability. The study found that going to bed very early or very late didn’t affect cognitive performance, as long as the bedtime was regular. “The poorest test scores were recoded by children who had irregular bedtimes, and this was especially true for girls between 3 and 7 years old.” said Amanda Sacker, director of the International Center for Health Studies at University College London. “The surprising thing was the later bedtimes weren’t greatly affecting children’s test scores. I think the message for parents is...maybe a regular bedtime even slightly later is advisable.” 28. What does the underlined word “twist” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Change. B. Explanation. C. Style. D. Revolution. 29. Which statement is true about the cognitive tests according to the text? A. Going to bed late affects children’s performance. B. Going to bed early helps children perform better. C. Children aged between 3 and 7 receive the tests. D. Girls with irregular bedtimes perform worse. 30. What actually leads to children’s poor cognitive performances based on Dr. Sacker ’s research? A. Irregular bedtime. B. Not enough sleeping time. C. Going to bed without dinner. D. Watching TV before going to bed. 31. Where does the text most probably come from? A. Science fiction. B. Children’s literature. C. A science report. D. An advertisement.

Zhihua Temple is one of the best preserved Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) buildings in Beijing. When its construction was completed in 1444, it was originally used as the family temple for Wang Zhen, a powerful eunuch (太监) who had a bad reputation favored by Emperor Zhengtong. A plaque(牌匾) with the emperor ’s handwritten script (真迹) was hung above the front gate, telling every visitor how glorious the temple used to be. Wang was killed five years later during the Tumu Crisis (土木之变), where Imperial Ming forces suffered a hug military defeat at the hands of the Mongols. Wang was generally considered to be responsible for the crisis. During the act of putting Wang Zhen to death, all of his other possessions were destroyed but the temple survived, thanks to the plaque. During its peak, Zhihua Temple covered an area as large as 20,000 square meters, but only some 10,000 square meters of grounds remain today. Zhihua Temple reopened on Jan 19th 2018 following a six-month reconstruction. “The biggest highlight of the temple is now the ancient building itself,” says Yang Zhiguo, director of the administration office for the Zhihua Temple. Known as the Beijing Museum for Cultural Heritage Exchanges since 1992, Zhihua Temple was mainly used as a place to offer general information about the development of museums in Beijing. People seemed to ignore its own cultural treasures. Many parts of the temple were closed to the public while the visiting areas remained dark and dusty. But now, the ceilings of the temple’s halls--full of delicate and amazing Buddhist paintings, statues and sculptures--have all been lighted up without using ultraviolet rays (紫外线) to avoid damaging the cultural relics. “This will help increase the amount of time visitors spend here appreciating the history of the temple.” Yang says. Following the rebuilding and the temple’s reopening, he expects the institution to operate more like a museum, which is better designed to tell the stories of the cultural relics it contains. 32. What do we know about Wangzhen? A. He was killed by the Mongols. B. He was the first owner of Zhihua Temple. C. All his possessions were destroyed in the act. D. He made a big contribution to the Ming Dynasty. 33. What causes the survival of Zhihua Temple in the act? A. Its large size. B. Its powerful owner. C. Its function serving as the family temple. D. The plaque with the emperor ’s handwritten script. 34. According to the text, the changes to Zhihua Temple after rebuilding include ________. A. More visiting areas B. longer opening time C. the lighting up of its ceilings D. more information about meseums development 35. What is the text mainly about? A. The rebuilding of Zhihua Temple. B. The death of Wang Zhen. C. The origin of Zhihua Temple. D. The importance of protecting cultural relics.
